This tomato variety is an indeterminate heirloom known for its unique, teardrop-shaped leaves and of course, its delicious, massive fruits! The Brandywine tomato plant is a vigorous grower that produces large fruit with pink skin and red flesh. These tomatoes reach over a pound each, are rich in flavor, and have a distinctively spiced taste.Brandywine Tomato Plant Care Start your tomatoes inside about 2-4 weeks before the last frost. Plant seeds one-quarter inch deep and keep them in a warm location. In ideal conditions, sprouts should appear in 5-6 days. Keep the sprouts warm until you are ready to plant outside. After the last frost, move sprouts outside to harden off, providing them with adequate space to grow large, heavy tomatoes. They require 24-36 inches of space between plants, and if you’ll have rows, make sure they are planted at least 3 feet apart. A robust trellis for support should be provided for each plant.Growing Brandywine Tomato Plant Brandywine tomato plants should be ready to harvest in 80 to 100 days. They absolutely need full sun, about 8-10 hours of direct, full sun per day. A 1-inch layer of mulch at the base (not touching the stem) can be beneficial as it will reduce weeds, improve drainage, and keep the soil warm. Brandywine tomato plants can grow 8-10 feet tall! Prune suckers off at the nodes of your Brandywine plants to encourage more flowering. These massive plants will need to be kept from sprawling. Trim off the foliage that touches the ground to decrease the risk of diseases. The soil for your Brandywine Tomato Plant should be rich in organic matter, and well draining. A slightly acidic soil pH of about 6.5 is best for strong growth.Watering Brandywine Tomato Plant Water at the soil level, avoiding the foliage. Once established, water the plant twice a week (or when dry), fully saturating the soil. Keep in mind that the roots do not like to be left sitting in soggy soil. On average, your plant(s) should receive one inch of water per week.Feeding Brandywine Tomato Plant These plants benefit from access to plenty of nutrients. When planting, use soil that is rich in organic matter. When plants begin to grow fruit, apply an organic fertilizer with a NPK ratio of 5-10-10, and repeat the feeding every 1-2 months. An excess of nitrogen will encourage only leaves, not that great fruit!Brandywine Tomato Plant InformationUSDA Hardiness Zones: 8 – 10Plant Type: Edible PlantsLight Exposure: Full Sun (At Least 6 Hours Of Direct Sunlight)Mature Height: 40 – 48 InchesMature Spread: 3.5 – 4 FeetSpacing: 3.5 – 4 FeetHabit: UprightFlower Color(s): NoneFlower Description: Bloom Period: Foliage Type: HerbaceousFoliage Color(s): GreenFoliage Description: Seasonal Interest: Summer FloweringWatering: AverageResists: N/ATolerates: N/AAttracts: Birds, ButterfliesContainer Role: Uses: Borders, Containers, Mass PlantingFeatures: Attracts Pollinators, Low MaintenanceBrand: Goodness GrowsCommon Name: Brandywine Tomato PlantOther Name(s): Brandywine TomatoScientific Name: Tomato ‘Brandywine’
