In 2006, plantsman David Kuhn shared this unusual mutation from Cryptomeria japonica ‘Black Dragon’ that he’d named Cryptomeria ‘Avid’s Dragon’. After 8 years, our original plant had formed an 8′ tall scraggly beanpole, so it was time to share. This odd sport grows with virtually no side branching. The side branches start to grow and then just fall off. After 8 years in the garden, I’ll admit that I’ve never seen anything quite like it. For those who like this kind of thing, this is exactly the kind of thing they’ll like.
