Noble Fir Tree (Abies procera), is the largest native fir in North America. It’s a lovely pyramidal-shaped evergreen with silvery-gray bark and bluish-green needles that grow on short, stiff branches that tilt slightly upward, ideal for hanging ornaments. Noble Firs, when young and still small, are suitable for indoor ornamental potted plants. They have a fast growth rate of 12 to 24 inches per year, and mature Noble Firs have been known to exceed 200 feet tall in the landscape! You can happily keep Noble Fir as a potted plant when it’s young and return it to its natural outdoor habitat the following spring, where it can thrive as the stunning, large evergreen specimen it’s meant to be. It is cold hardy in USDA hardiness Zones 5-6 and native to the Pacific Northwest. Best Locations For Growing Noble Fir TreeWhether you are keeping a Noble Fir in a pot or planting it in the landscape, mimic its natural Pacific Northwest climate, and this tree will be happy. Be sure to place a potted Noble Fir in the coolest location inside your home and keep it away from any direct forced-heat sources, which can cause needle drop and browning. Noble Firs thrive in higher humidity levels. Provide cooler air temperatures and at least 4 hours of direct sunlight daily. Noble Fir Tree Sunlight RequirementsProvide at least 4 hours of bright, direct sunlight per day.Noble Fir Tree CareNoble fir is relatively low maintenance if it’s placed in an environment similar to its native habitat. The soil needs to be slightly acidic (5.0 to 6.5), moist, rich, and well-draining. Very little maintenance is required other than pruning any broken or dried branches with sharp, clean pruners. Because of its fast growth rate and eventual size, it’s best to plant it outdoors once it has outgrown its container. Outside its growing range, you can keep it in a pot for another season, bringing it outdoors during the summer and then back indoors in the winter. Watering Noble Fir TreeNoble Fir requires consistently moist, rich, well-draining soil. Check the moisture levels often and be sure to provide adequate cool humidity in the air. Feeding Noble Fir TreeNot necessary to fertilize.
