Rising in popularity because of their ease of care and ability to bloom indoors, Hoyas are exciting semi-succulents that are more tolerant of indoor lighting than the average succulent. The Publicalyx Hoya (Hoya publicalyx, also called the Wax Plant) has pointed, lance-shaped leaves that are thick, matte green, and often flecked with silver. These trailing vines make great hanging plants as well as climbers, wrapping themselves around a structure with thick green to burgundy vines. When mature and kept in bright enough light, these vines bloom with a fragrant ball of deep maroon to bright-pink star-shaped flowers, described as smelling like chocolate or mocha. Best Locations For Publicalyx HoyaGrowing well in bright to medium light, the Publicalyx Hoya is a versatile plant that can do well in any bright room. This Hoya is attractive as a hanging plant, dangling from a bright kitchen or living room window. As a climbing plant, Hoya does well wrapped around a trellis or climbing in any number of creative ways. Hoyas are non-toxic, making them great plants for homes with pets and children. Publicalyx Hoya Sunlight RequirementsHoyas do best in bright indirect light, but can handle some direct sunlight as well as medium light. For this reason, you can place the Hoya Publicalyx in any window or farther inside a room with a bright south- or west-facing window. Hoyas can receive some direct afternoon light, though they will take some time to adjust and may burn or lose their green color when exposed to intense light. Increased light will also affect how often these plants need to be watered. Publicalyx Hoya CareHoyas are generally low-maintenance plants, needing little more than occasional water. Because the Publicalyx Hoya is a semi-succulent, it will do best when kept in a smaller pot for a few years. Excess soil around a plant’s roots can stay damp for longer, increasing the chance of root rot in water-sensitive plants like a Hoya. When repotting is necessary, choose a pot with drainage holes that is slightly larger than the previous. Hoyas do best in loose, well-draining soil like a succulent or cactus mix. Watering Publicalyx HoyaSimilar to succulents and cacti, Hoyas are able to store water in their plump leaves, making them relatively drought tolerant. As semi-succulents, however, they do require a bit more watering than the average succulent. Allow the soil to dry out almost completely before watering deeply. When soil dries out, it may take a few passes before the soil retains water. Another way to tell when a Hoya is ready for water is by feeling the leaves. Freshly watered, Hoya leaves will be thick and firm, full of water. After a couple of weeks or so, the leaves will start to become soft and pliable, ready for a good soaking. Do not allow Hoyas to dry out too much, however, as they will drop their leaves when too drought stressed. The frequency of watering will depend on light, temperature, and humidity, so feel the soil prior to watering about every two to four weeks.Feeding Publicalyx HoyaHoyas have average fertilizer needs, benefitting from occasional fertilizing during their growing period. In the spring and summer months, add a liquid houseplant fertilizer into your watering routine once a month, watering with the diluted fertilizer mixture once the soil is already slightly damp to avoid burning the plant’s roots. Always follow dilution recommendations to avoid damaging a plant with too much fertilizer. It is unnecessary to fertilize in the winter when the plant’s growth rate has slowed.
